SOCIETY A woman, became Councillor on 12 June at the Morocco, was elected Monday Mayor of Marrakech (South), becoming the first woman to lead this city, one of the major cities (more than one million inhabitants) and tourist destinations in the Kingdom.
Fatima Zahra Mansouri, a 33 year old lawyer member of the authenticity and modernity party (WFP), created in 2008 by Fouad Ali El Himma, a relative of King Mohammed VI, received 54 votes. The outgoing Mayor, Omar Jazouli, 75 (Union Constitutionnelle/UC, liberal), received 35 votes. There were 2 ballots invalid.
Ms. Mansuri became the second woman mayor in the history of the Morocco after Asmaa Chaâbi, who presided, between 2003 and this year, Mayor of Essaouira (West).
"I am honoured to lead the city of Marrakech," said Ms. Mansuri. "I hope to deliver this new mission".
"His election returns the image of a modern Morocco", said the Secretary General of WFP, Sheikh Mohamed Biyadillah.
"Mr. Jazouli balance is negative." He was exhausted by the authority. "The city, view its socio-economic weight at national level and international image is in need of blood nine for better governance", said a member of the municipal Council who wished to remain anonymous.
