Royal Golf de Marrakech
GOLF You may hear people say that Marrakesh is a city of gardens, but in recent years it has also become a city of golf clubs. But the oldest club is located at the doors to the Palmeraie, heading towards Ouarzazate, and it’s the Royal Golf de Marrakech.
The first ball was hit in 1923. A project initiated by Hadj Thami El Glaoui Mezouari, the pacha at the time, it has evolved over the years. The first modifications were to bring in a trio of golf professionals, notably French golf pro Arnaud Massy, known for being the best player of all time.
Over the years, the course, dominated by the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, has seduced the biggest names of the last century, like His Majesty Hassan II and even Presidents Winston Churchill and Eisenhower.
In 2008, thanks to the combined efforts of a Rbati expert and a talented and specialized architect, nine additional holes were added to the course, bringing the total number to 27. Various sizes and levels of difficulty, the three pars in 36 strokes are intelligently spread out over 74 hectares of the magnificently shaded property.
Of all the obstacles, the complexity of certain holes cause greater fear than others. In particular, that named, "Les seins de Brigitte Bardot" due to the two mounds at the entrance to the green, although it may be seductive it may hide the amount of technique required to achieve a par three.
The relatively complicated Koutoubia course spreads over 3,014 metres, but is nevertheless very exciting.
The second nine holes, Agdal, is the shortest of the three at 2,939 metres. It starts near the clubhouse, an ideal place to start!
The latest course, Menara, is located between bodies of water and bunkers, and spreads over 3,072 metres. Golfers will be pleasantly challenged throughout the course.
Nestled in the midst of some dense vegetation, but perfectly cared for, the clubhouse, Les Jardins de l’Eden, is the envy of all golfers and outside guests gathering for a drink or meal togheter. The menu is much-appreciated and guests enjoy dining on the terrace of the restaurant.
